Over the next few weeks, the Rogue Team will be sharing a number of ideas and opinions put together in collaboration with some of the people we have been working with over the past year.
Today's post comes from David Lavigne, the Lead for the Maritimes at IT Pilots, exploring some of the challenges facing businesses and organizations when it comes to Data Security.
Organizations must ensure that their data is protected as a data breach could result in a lawsuit, fines, and reputational damage. Insufficient data protection practices can lead to financial losses, customer dissatisfaction, and erosion of brand credibility.
What keeps us from safeguarding our data to prevent breaches? Is it due to a lack of awareness, high costs, or simply a failure to recognize the significance of data protection? It's important to explore why we sometimes overlook the necessary steps to keep our data secure and protected from breaches.
When it comes to data security, companies often encounter a range of challenges. One of the biggest obstacles is the sheer volume and diversity of data that needs to be protected, which can make it difficult to secure every single piece of information. Additionally, due to their size and reputation, companies may become a more frequent target for cybercriminals. Furthermore, the complexity of their IT systems and infrastructure may create opportunities for cybercriminals to exploit their vulnerabilities. Ultimately, a lack of prioritization towards data security may lead to inadequate policies and measures, which is the most common factor behind companies' struggles with data security.
There are many companies that collect and sell consumer data, which is why data breaches occur. It is often the case that the companies buying and selling your data do not have up-to-date security protocols which makes it more likely that your data will be exposed in a breach or a hack if there are more companies holding it.
There have been recent cases within our Canadian healthcare system that data breaches or hacks have occurred. Undoubtedly, a data breach is the last thing any healthcare organization wants to experience.
The mere thought of an unauthorized individual gaining access to sensitive patient information is enough to keep them up at night, obsessing over each security measure and assessing potential vulnerabilities. Unfortunately, the cost of a data breach can be far greater than implementing proper security protocols, making it a significant concern for healthcare providers.
For healthcare organizations, safeguarding patient health information is crucial. Not only is it legally mandated, but it's also in the company's best interest. By assuring patients that their data is secure, they're more likely to remain loyal to your business.
You cannot be 100% sure of anything. Most companies send us long explanations of the steps they take to secure private information, but there are no guarantees. When it comes to security, believe that whatever the human mind can encrypt, another human mind can decode. Will it be bullet proof, no! But you need to take the necessary steps to ensure your protected and compliant.
